Lin set the stage for my professional outlook and behavior. Lin has been such a guiding force in my life. I met Lin when I first started working at MSU (14 years ago?). I admired her honesty - even with "upper administration". I knew that one day I wanted to be just like Lin Harper. I remember the time period when I became Lin - I was so proud of myself for being tough, yet not quite a bitch (at least I hope so). Before Lin, I didn't realize a lot of things about how to deal with and handle colleagues.

Lin's ability to laugh and have a great time with her work. I learned that from her too.

My other memory of Lin is her husband, Ron. God love that man! Isn't he just the best?

I love you Lin!

This is an experiment for me, much as it was for you in the early days....just trying to get a feel for what it is and what it does. And, you know, you do have to "keep up" with what's going on out there in virtual reality. Alas, I have little time for this stuff now, although I love playing around with it! So far, other than the virtual puppy, I find the blog more to my liking....but you're right, too -- the summer is still young!

I think social networking sites have value. You may find that odd since my FaceBook account has only one friend - Lin Harper. When FaceBook became a site where our students lived, I opened an account just to see what this was about. Quickly, students in my office asked me to be their friend. I immediately ignored their request. I had no desire to be anyone's friend - especially students in my office. Did I really want to know what they did last night? Or see pictures that may or may not be appropriate viewing?

Recently, I did keep up with several FaceBook groups as an avenue to keep up with student viewpoints on several issues at MSU. I do find social networking sites interesting to "keep up with what others are thinking". I enjoy blogs tremendously and have created a customized igoogle page that has all the blogs I read in one location. Very handy!

Back to your question.....are social networks a drain on time? Certainly! Are social networks good for business? You betcha! I try to use/view certain sites to keep current with technology and how students are using that technology. I can read about technology, but using flickr, blogs, igoogle, youtube is the best way to understand how are these sites being used, what value are the sites to others, etc.

Don't look for me to post much on your facebook site - not that I don't care, I just haven't found a compelling reason to actually join in the facebook community. While I enjoy some groups tremendously, I haven't had a desire to comment - yet.

Who knows what the summer will bring, however.

Hi, Kathleen!

We ended up going with Google Calendar since it's free and supposedly easy. Well, it is easy until you factor in my sweet husband whose need to complicate things completely unwinds me! Anyway, he tweaked and worried at it until it works, which is all I cared about anyway!

Yes, we are taking a real vacation this year, replete with one destination, a base of operations, and a definite time frame! Very unlike our usual "trips" which have us leaving for an undetermined time, spending lots of time "on the journey" and never really having a "destination" in mind. It'll be different from what we usually do and enjoy, but this, too, will be fun. I am definitely looking forward to the change of scenery. April is gorgeous on the island, if you're looking for a get-away! sugar-sand beaches, remoteness, and a sense of isolation, all the while having the "real world" just 20 minutes or so away in the form of Mobile.

You guys up at State have surely been in the news in the last few weeks. Hope to catch up with you soon and hear all the latest! Thank you for your continuing support of our little lives and dramas. You are a valued friend, friend!

Thank goodness the shared calendar is working fine. I was beginning to worry. I'm having difficulty keeping up with your schedules and I'm just reading it! What product did you end up using successfully?

Congrats on the Dauphin Island rental. Tell me more.

Love reading the updates on you and The Writer. God Bless.

Hi, Karen. Your comments touch me. It is hard to live with an artist, regardless of the art form. Their passion for the "piece" sort of seems to drown out other things, and sometimes it feels like I'm drowning in it, too.

Like you, I have found I have to "get on with my own agenda," stay the course with my own work, my own art, my own passions, and we come back to some sort of mid-range operations.

I once read somewhere (probably a Hallmark card) that true love is not two people gazing into one another's eyes, but two people looking in the same direction -- Okay, hokey, but somehow, also true for me. We share a vision for his work, at least to the extent I am able, but we also share a vision for my work, our life together, our family. As long as we are looking "in the same direction" on those important pieces, the rest will sort itself out with time and love.

Please feel free to come back and continue to share your own struggles with us all. I appreciate your comments and send my best to you.
