“In truth a family is what you make it. It is made strong, not by the number of heads counted at the dinner table, but by the rituals you help family members create, by the memories you share, by the commitment of time, caring…, and love you show to one another, and by the hopes for the future you have as individuals and as a unit.”

Just wanted to start a place to keep quotations (famous or not) that are meaningful…perhaps even a reflection on those quotes, notes on where I heard them, etc. Feel free to add your own to the board…

“A ship in harbor is safe. That is not what ships are made for.”
- Gerald Manley Hopkins
Subhan, do you remember this? It was on a bookmark you gave me many years ago when we all lived in the house on 19th in Hattiesburg. I still have the bookmark, too. It and you have made a forever impression on my life, and I love you and thank you. Blessings.

Yet in 35 years of talking to the Dalai Lama, and covering him everywhere from Zurich to Hiroshima, as a non-Buddhist, skeptical journalist, I’ve found him to be as deeply confident, and therefore sunny, as anyone I’ve met. And I’ve begun to think that his almost visible glow does not come from any mysterious or unique source. Indeed, mysteries and rumors of his own uniqueness are two of the things that cause him most instantly to erupt into warm laughter. The Dalai Lama I’ve seen is a realist (which is what makes his optimism the more impressive and persuasive).
~Pico Iyer (NY Times, July 23, 2009: The Doctor is Within)

What was it she said at dinner?
‘I guess I’m being too analytical’ Maggie
‘Really?’ Ashi
‘Do you know what that means?’ Ron
‘Hmmm, let me break it down . . .’ Maggie
